On March 1, 2009, Norman Fire Department’s Chief of Training Rick Bacon was struck from behind by a car while riding his bicycle. He suffered severe brain injuries, spinal injuries, broken scapula, broken ribs, and a punctured lung. Since this time he has made some significant recovery, but he still has a long way to go. Norman firefighters have initiated the distribution of some wristbands for a minimum donation of $5.00 each in an effort to help and support Rick and his family through this troubling time. Anyone wishing to assist us in helping Rick and his wife meet some of the financial obligations associated with the accident may contact Norman Fire Administration at (405) 292-9780 or drop by any one of the seven Fire Stations listed below to obtain one of these wristbands. Anyone wishing to simply donate may do so by depositing funds directly into the Rick Bacon Relief Fund at any First American Bank, which may be contacted at 579-7000. Checks should be made payable to the Rick Bacon Relief Fund. Thank you for all your support and concern.

**Ricky Bacon update**

A Norman firefighter, who spent almost two weeks in a coma after he was injured in a bicycle/vehicle accident  is awake and improving.

Norman Fire Dept. Training Chief, Rick Bacon,  had been in a coma at Presbyterian Hospital in OKC, since March 1, 2009.

Bacon was riding his bicycle near his home in OKC, when a vehicle collided with his bicycle.  The driver stopped and call emergency services for help.  Bacon was wearing a helmut.

Norman Fire Deputy Chief, Jim Bailey said Bacon was moved from Presbyterian Hospital to Norman Specialty Hospital on W. Robinson street on Monday.   He was awake and talking Bailey said.

Bailey said even tho Bacon is conscious, he's still a bit confused about the events that landed him in the hospital.  He's still in a fog, Bailey said.   Things are going well, his recovery is going well.

Bacon will undergo physical therapy as part of his recuperation.  He's made leaps and bounds in the last 3-4 days.  It's a long process of recovery anytime the brain has suffered injury.

Norman Firefighters have taken turns sitting with Bacon at the hospital overnight in case he needs anything.
